On 25th January, 1915, the Germans launched a strong attack, the First Action of Givenchy, against 1 Brigade of 1st Division, both north and south of the La Bassée canal during which they penetrated Givenchy and were only stopped at the keeps or strongholds behind the support line, The reserves of 3 Brigade, consisting of the 1st Gloucestershire, 1st South Wales Borderers, 2nd Royal Munster Fusiliers and 2nd Welsh battalions counter attacked straight away and were instrumental in recapturing the lost trenches. The battalion diary of 1st South Wales Borderers recorded that the next day, 26th January, was a very quiet day and makes no mention of any casualties so it may be the case that George Palmer, whose death is recorded on 26th January, was killed on the previous day but that this was not recorded accurately. |
